4 ingredient swaps for a healthier pumpkin spice latte

Once the fall weather hits, it is the perfect time to cozy up with a delicious warm beverage. One of the season’s most popular drinks is the Pumpkin Spice Latte. However, while it’s sweet, cozy, and delicious, it’s not necessarily the most healthy beverage choice. So if you’re going to indulge in a PSL this season, why not make these easy and healthy swaps!

Coffee

The base of a Pumpkin Spice Latte is espresso or coffee, so this step is pretty simple. Use your favourite coffee or espresso blend to give the drink that cozy coffee flavour. It is preferable to use something a little bit stronger, so you get the bold coffee flavour over the sweetness of the pumpkin spices.

Milk

When making a latte, a large portion of the drink is milk, so this can be a quick and easy swap. Use your favourite milk alternative, such as oat or almond milk, preferably without any added flavour or sugar, as the drink will be sweetened separately. By using oat milk, you can achieve that creamy quality that is most common with regular milk.

Sugar

Try swapping out regular sugar for maple syrup or agave in your Pumpkin Spice Latte. This is a great way to boost that warm, autumn flavour with maple syrup or just add a little extra sweetness with agave. Making this simple change can significantly lower the sugar content in the drink, making it a whole lot healthier!

Pumpkin -

As far as the pumpkin portion of the beverage goes, just make sure that you use 100% pure pumpkin puree for that warm, almost savoury autumn flavour. Of course, you can boost the flavour and sweetness with your chosen sweetener and milk, so it’s best to use pure pumpkin and not the pre-sweetened variety.

Once you have all your ingredients ready to go, you can froth up your milk of choice with a scoop of pumpkin puree. Add that to your brewed coffee or espresso with some pumpkin pie spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg, and then top with an extra sprinkle of cinnamon! By making these quick and easy swaps you can turn this season’s favourite beverage into a healthy one.
