Kefir is a misunderstood beverage (and often mispronounced too). It has the familiar tang of yogurt, but you drink it from a glass rather than eat it with a spoon. Kefir is also a much better source of probiotics than typical yogurts. Here are a few more things you probably didn’t know about kefir!

What You Didn’t Know

It supports the immune system

There are a variety of compounds in kefir that have been studied for their positive effects on the immune system, one in particular is kefiran which has anti-inflammatory benefits. The probiotics in kefir also play a prominent role in its immune supporting benefits.

It promotes bone health

Vitamin K2 is a product of fermentation, and since kefir is fermented it it likely to be a good source of this nutrient. K2 is hard to come by in the diet but plays an important role in bone health, helping calcium (also found in kefir) to do its job. Consuming a high-quality kefir is an easy way to get more K2 into your diet.

It supports digestion

Like yogurt, kefir contains healthy probiotics but in much high concentrations. The digestive tract is populated with healthy bacteria that play a crucial role in digestion. Unfortunately, we don’t consume fermented dishes like kimchi, sauerkraut and miso as often as we once did. This, combined with poor diet, stress and environmental concerns have greatly affected our gut health. Adding kefir to smoothies can be a great way to consume more probiotics everyday.
