Allergy-Friendly Halloween In COVID-19 Times And Beyond

Ottawa trick-or-treating may be temporarily discouraged for safety reasons during COVID-19, but that’s no reason that your family should cancel this year’s Halloween. Many families are brainstorming creative solutions to bring the Halloween spirit into their households. For example, virtual costume contests and in-house scavenger hunts are socially distanced and fun ways to celebrate the holiday.

Others are preparing and distributing thoughtful Halloween treat bags to their friends and neighbouring households. But what if your children have allergies or sensitivities? These days it’s easy to find peanut-free options, but what about little ones with allergies to dairy, gluten, soy and artificial colours? It’s unrealistic to think that all (or maybe even any) in your neighborhood will consider the allergens hidden in their Halloween candy.

At Kardish, we believe in promoting a safe, happy Halloween where every child can feel included!  We have two great ideas for making it fun for everyone.

The Switch Witch

Halloween can be a tricky situation for parents of children with food allergies. It’s no problem when you have the switch witch! If you put out all the candy gathered on Halloween night, the switch witch will swap them for treats that everyone can enjoy.

If you are a parent and want to introduce the switch witch to your kids, check out the Allergy-Friendly Halloween List for alternative treat ideas.

The Teal Pumpkin Project™

In non-COVID times, you can help to promote a safer, happier Halloween for everyone by supporting The Teal Pumpkin Project. By placing a teal pumpkin on your doorstep or printing a sign for your window, you are letting kids and parents know that you have non-food items like stickers, crayons and glow sticks available if allergies are a concern.

Everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy all aspects of Halloween in COVID-19 times and beyond. No one should be left out because of dietary restrictions or health concerns, and we hope these ideas help your household enjoy the holiday!
